Mikey Dread (born Michael Campbell in 1954 in Port Antonio, Jamaica; passed away in 2008) was a highly influential reggae artist, producer, and pioneering radio DJ. He began his career at the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation (JBC) in 1976, where his radio show “Dread At The Controls” became the top reggae program on the island due to its focus on roots reggae and fresh revolutionary music—a rarity at the time. Mikey’s unique broadcasting style, including his distinctive voice and creative jingles recorded at King Tubby’s studio, made his show a cultural staple in Jamaica.

In 1979, Mikey left JBC to focus on music production, launching his own label, DATC (Dread At The Controls), and working with prominent reggae artists like Sugar Minott, Junior Murvin, and Lee Perry. His production work, often mixed with dub legend King Tubby, significantly shaped reggae’s sound in the late 1970s and 1980s.

Mikey Dread is also known for his collaboration with UK punk band The Clash, contributing to their iconic “Sandinista” album, which helped to integrate reggae rhythms into punk music on a global scale.
